Uma Viagem Inesquecível

Abstract

We wrote this short story as a collaborative assignment for our “Advanced Composition and Conversation” class in Portuguese. The course began with the creation of a narrative story that allowed us to analyze and discuss come of its different components: the narrator, characters, plot, setting, and time period. Playing around with these components as we developed our own short in Portuguese was a challenge that helped us to improve our writing skills, grammar and overall language competence.

After the course, we noticed improvements in the flow of our conversation and in our confidence writing and reading in Portuguese. Writing this short story was an important part of the process and was possible because of the skills we gained in Portuguese Language and Culture classes one through four. We were able to review and strengthen our abilities while tapping into our creativity. It was important that the story allowed us the freedom to go in whichever direction we wanted.

One unique aspect of this assignment was the chance to work on our stories with partners while receiving feedback on both the content and language. This collaboration made the writing process more engaging, as we could learn from everyone’s different approaches to storytelling in Portuguese. It was a way to learn from each other’s perspectives. This exercise also gave us a deeper understanding of grammar and vocabulary by comparing our writing styles and learning from each other's strengths. By reading and critiquing each other's work, we not only improved our own story but also gained a deeper appreciation for the language.

This short story was an engaging way to build our abilities by combining creativity with linguistic precision. Instead of memorizing grammar rules, or working on worksheets, we applied what we learned in a more meaningful and hands-on way. Writing a story required us to think logically about our word choice, sentence structure, and literary elements, all of which strengthened our skills. It was a challenging but fun experience that showcases how much we have grown in the Portuguese language, while also allowing us a chance to use a more creative outlet to express ourselves.

“Uma Viagem Inesquecível”

Sempre foi a Cacá e sua mãe desde que ela nasceu. A mãe dela sempre tinha uma alma jovem e sempre fez tudo para Cacá e por isso ficaram as duas mais como melhores amigas do que como mãe e filha. Cada ano ela tenta fazer uma surpresa para Cacá, mas este ano é especial porque a Cacá vai fazer 21 anos então ela queria planejar uma surpresa inesquecível.

Cacá estava no seu quarto quando sua mãe abriu a porta e com duas malas enormes cor de rosa.

• “Por que você tem duas malas?”
• “Tenho uma surpresa para você minha querida filha! Por seu aniversário vamos nas férias para o planeta de Fogo e Gelo!”

A cara dela se iluminou e ela suspirou.

• “Sério mãe?!”
• “Claro! Temos que arrumar as malas! Vamos para a parte Fogo, então traga sua roupa de verão! Os biquínis, vestidos, sandálias, e também o bronzeador para deitarmos no sol!”
• “Que bom! Vai ser uma viagem inesquecível!”

Logo em seguida, as duas chegaram lá no resorte, Foguíssimo, e o gerente cumprimentou a Cacá e a sua mãe. A Cacá ficou surpresa que o gerente era tão pequeno e jovem.

• “Oi meninas! Bem vindas ao Foguíssimo! Eu sou o João Kukas, o gerente do resorte. Vocês têm o número da reserva?”
• “Sim, é 123 e meu nome é Mamãe Cacá”
• “Com licença senhora, mas eu não estou a ver uma reserva por vocês neste resorte.”
• “Desculpe senhor, mas você pode olhar de novo? Por que eu reservei por uma semana aqui neste resorte.”

O João Kukas estava ficando chateado e rolou os seus olhos. A Cacá já estava ficando nervosa, ela queria ficar na praia hoje.

• “Não está apresentando nada aqui. Vocês têm certeza que têm reserva aqui?”

A Cacá estava agora zangada. A mãe dela nunca estava errada e este gerente de criança estava rude demais!

• “SE A MINHA MÃE DISSE QUE FEZ A RESERVA AQUÍ, ELA FEZ AQUÍ!”
• “Eu sou o gerente deste resorte, e se eu estou falando que não tem uma reserva. É porque NÃO TEM aqui NADA!”
• “Você está brincando comigo, ache a nossa reserva antes que pule por cima dessa secretária e dê um soco em você!”

O João Kukas inspirou profundamente. Ele não podia chatear seus pais, ou ele não podia jogar com os amigos mais logo. Era o aniversário de 13 anos de seu amigo João Lukas.

• “Eu vou lhe dar um ultimato. Vocês podem ir para ou outro lado do planeta e ficar no nosso hotel lá, em Gelo, ou vocês podem sair da minha cara e voltar para casa!”

A Cacá estava tão zangada, mas a sua mãe estava a ficar ansiosa e a Cacá sabia que ela tirou tanto tempo para planejar uma surpresa grande para ela. Por isso, ela decidiu ao menos salvar a viagem.

• “Isso é muito estúpido, mas tá bom. E só para você saber, você deveria voltar para os seus brinquedos. Ser um gerente não é trabalho de criança!”

A Cacá e sua mãe, chateadas, viajaram para o Gelo. Mas o que elas encontraram lá foi um resorte maravilhoso de esqui. A Cacá nunca viu neve assim tão linda. Durante a semana, as duas aprenderam que elas amam esqui! Elas compraram esquis rosas, beberam leite de chocolate quente e ficaram planejando o seu retorno!

Biographical Statement - Kaylee Estevao and Bianca Correa

Kaylee Estevao

I am currently a senior studying exercise science with a minor in Portuguese studies. Although I was born here in the United States, both of my parents were born in the Minho region of Portugal, my mother immigrating here as a child and my dad as a young adult. In my family we are very proud of our Portuguese heritage and frequently celebrate different traditions and holidays with our extended family. Growing up in Somerville, Massachusetts, I made a lot of Portuguese and Brazilian friends and learned how many other Portuguese speaking people live in Massachusetts. Living with my maternal grandparents, I also learned quickly how even in diverse cities it can still be hard to find accessible translation services, especially in healthcare. I wanted to strengthen the fluency of my Portuguese as well as expand my vocabulary with the intent to be able to provide healthcare in Portuguese as a physical therapist. I am excited to have completed the Portuguese Studies Minor and will be starting the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program here at UMass Lowell in May following graduation!

Bianca Correã

I am currently an undergraduate student at UMass Lowell majoring in Biology with minors in Portuguese and Psychology. My passion for healthcare equity is connected to my personal experiences as a first-generation student. I seek to apply my knowledge of patient needs and my fluency in Portuguese to advocate for underserved communities in healthcare, bridging cultural and linguistic gaps. In my future career in pediatric emergency medicine, I hope to find innovative ways of providing compassionate and inclusive care.
