Abstract

This personal essay shares my experience of how Venezuela has changed for the worse after the election of Hugo Chávez. I decided to write about how Venezuelans are suffering because Donald Trump strongly reminded me of Chávez; watching his election was difficult because I have seen how hatred can destroy a beautiful, wealthy country. Within this essay, I also include a conversation with Mikeyla Barmettler, another Venezuelan who had to leave our country and build a new life abroad. We spoke about fear, violence, as well as the difficulties and possibilities that are now part of our lives.
