Abstract

This essay begins with the introduction of a family friend named Olga, who remembers the social impact of the nationalist movement both in Puerto Rico as a young girl and in the Bronx, where she grew up. After researching some of the events that Olga described, I reflected on my own relationship with Puerto Rico. Growing up in a non-diverse area of Lowell, I often felt that I had lost touch with my culture and language. After considering the racial intolerance of the community around me, and the decisions made by my family in response, my views began to shift. I saw that my willingness to begin to immerse myself within the language, culture and history of Puerto Rico (and my family) helped to recover the connection that I thought I had lost.
