Abstract

Dr. Eugenia Paulicelli is a professor as well as the founder and director of the Fashion Studies Program at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She visited UMass Lowell last fall to give a speech on fashion as it relates to global identity. Professor Paulicelli sat down with our conversational Italian class to answer our questions. She described the traditional roles that women used to have in some of the smaller southern villages of Italy, and talked about her decision to break away from the old sets of values. We learned of her journey from Italy to the United States to pursue her doctorate degree. Then our conversation delved into the evolution of fashion, and the professor informed us of the influences it has on national identities and global consumerism. What I learned from Eugenia Paulicelli was the sentimental value and importance of fashion as something immaterial; she explained that fashion can forge bonds between the hands and bodies that it touches.
