Ecos do tempo

Abstract

This past fall I had the chance to take "Advanced Portuguese Grammar," which was a nice change from my three graduate courses. It allowed me to focus on my Portuguese background and really sharpen my knowledge of the language. While I grew up speaking Portuguese with my great-grandparents at a young age and attended Portuguese school on the side growing up, this course kept me on my toes and taught me a lot. The professor, Frank Sousa, expanded my vocabulary and allowed me to think critically when it came to grammar decisions in the essays I wrote for the class.

For our final written assignment, we were tasked with either writing a short story about ourselves or writing a work of fiction. I thought of my love for movie series like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings and decided to make my own short fantasy story. My project, “Ecos do Tempo,” tells the story of a wizard, Arindor, who learns of a magic time stone when dusting off books in a library's basement working for a wise librarian named Eldrin. Arindor is met with a cursed apple on his journey set out by Maelthor, the evil wizard in the story. Maelthor’s assistant Kael ultimately ends up helping Arindor escape his trance and triumph. The story ends with Arindor using a spell called “Mors Incantum”— Latin for ‘enchanted death.’ The influence of Harry Potter can be seen in Kael’s similarity to Snape and in the use of spells with evocative names. The Lord of the Rings inspired the idea of time stone itself which, like the one ring, is destroyed at the end of my story.

While this project was a lot of fun for me, I mostly enjoyed making revisions and applying proper advanced grammar techniques that I learned from class. It was interesting to see how much stronger it made my storytelling, and how effective it was to tie together different points. It was also gratifying to internally understand how structurally sound the different sentences were, especially those that used object pronouns in their proper places. A good example of this would be in the sentence, “Mas quando as coisas viraram difíceis, Kael ajudou-o...”. Here, in Portuguese from Portugal, the ‘-o’ comes after the verb, while Brazilian Portuguese would place it before (‘o ajudou’). Little things like this really stood out to me in the course and not only did they make me a better writer, but they also helped me feel more connected to my style of Portuguese, which is the Portuguese of my family.

Ecos do tempo

Na grande biblioteca de Eldoria, havia um jovem mago chamado Arindor. Ele amava aprender e era aprendiz do Eldrin, o velho e sábio guardião da biblioteca. A vida de Arindor mudou quando ele encontrou um livro antigo na cave da biblioteca, que falava de uma mágica secreta chamada Cronomancia. Eldrin, o guardião da biblioteca, descobriu e alertou Arindor para o perigo de brincar com o tempo. Mas Arindor não conseguia deixar de pensar na Pedra do Tempo, um poderoso relicário num lugar distante chamado Lorian. Essa pedra podia controlar o próprio tempo.

Então, Arindor partiu numa longa jornada cheia de voltas, tão estranhas como os muitos corredores da biblioteca. Ironicamente, a parte mais perigosa da viagem foi quando ele encontrou uma simples maçã em seu caminho. O malvado mago Maelthor, que queria todo o poder para si, havia colocado a maçã ali. Afinal, era uma armadilha que fazia Arindor se sentir confuso e fraco.

Nessa confusão, Arindor viu a imagem de um homem murmurando feitiços baixinho. Esse homem era Kael, que estava ajudando o malvado mago Maelthor. Mas os feitiços de Kael estavam na verdade quebrando a magia de Maelthor, ajudando secretamente Arindor a se tornar mais forte e lúcido. Com esse poder, Arindor começou a usar sua magia descontroladamente, lançando feitiço após feitiço, tentando combater a influência de Maelthor. Mas tal, foi uma prova difícil, forçando-o a usar todo o seu conhecimento e poder para resistir à magia negra da Maelthor.

No meio dessa confusão, Arindor finalmente se encontrou face-a-face com Kael. No início, Arindor não tinha a certeza se Kael era amigo ou inimigo. Mas quando as coisas viraram difíceis, Kael ajudou-o, e com esse apoio, Arindor superou a confusão e ficou pronto, valente para enfrentar Maelthor.

Maelthor era forte e não duvidava das suas forcas para vencer, mas Arindor estava pronto para combatê-lo agora. Com a presença inesperada de Kael, ele pôde enfrentar Maelthor e lutar de igual para igual. A batalha entre os dois foi feroz, com feitiços brilhantes voando para lá e para cá.

Foi em Lorian, entre pedras antigas e cheias de história, que Arindor e Maelthor tiveram sua luta final. Arindor sabia que tinha que acabar com isso de vez. Ele então usou toda a sua força para lançar um poderoso feitiço, "Mors Incatum", contra o Maelthor. Esse feitiço era forte mas arriscado. A final, ele acertou Maelthor com força, e o “Mago das Trevas” caiu, seu poder maligno tendo desaparecido.

Depois de Maelthor ser derrotado, tudo ficou calmo. Foi então que Arindor se aproximou da Pedra do Tempo, que era deslumbrante e brilhava com uma luz estranha. Havia sinais estranhos nela e parecia chamar Arindor, oferecendo-lhe o poder de controlar o tempo. Mas Arindor se lembrou das palavras de Eldrin sobre o perigo de tal poder. Ele sabia que tinha de destruir a Pedra do Tempo. Com o coração pesaroso por ter que destruir algo tão belo, ele usou sua varinha mágica e quebrou a pedra, que rachou e se partiu em mil pedaços, e o tempo começou a fluir normalmente.

Enquanto os pedaços da Pedra do Tempo jaziam no chão como mortos, Arindor se sentiu feliz e triste ao mesmo tempo. Ele havia salvado todos de Maelthor e da Pedra do Tempo, mas também tinha quebrado algo antigo e maravilhoso. De volta à biblioteca, Eldrin ouviu a história de Arindor. Eldrin parecia orgulhoso e compreensivo. Arindor percebeu que algumas decisões na vida são grandes demais para partilhar com quem que seja. Apenas aqueles que tivessem presenciado a luta e o seu desenlace poderiam realmente entender. Haveria para sempre uma conexão entre Eldrin e Arindor, um sentimento em comum na base do que eles haviam renunciado pelo bem de todos.

E assim, a história de Arindor, Kael e a Pedra do Tempo se tornou uma lenda, contada de geração em geração pelo mundo fora. A fim de proteger o bem comum, era uma memória profunda da coragem e do sacrifício exigidos aos seres humanos para poderem superar o desejo de poder.

Biographical Statement - Nuno Mestre

I am a computer science student at UML set to graduate in the spring of 2024. I am also enrolled in the 4+1 program at the university, pursuing my MS in computer science the following year. My coursework has been mostly focused on machine learning and artificial intelligence, but outside of class I learned web development skills and have worked as a full-stack developer. In my free time, I like to watch and play sports with my friends and spend time with my family. My favorite sport is soccer and I even referee soccer as a side job. My favorite soccer team in Sporting Clube de Portugal.

As for my personal life, both of my parents are Portuguese, and I have one younger sister. My father was born in Portugal in a town called Antigo de Curros and my mother was born in Massachusetts, but she also has family in the town my dad grew up in. I like visiting every other year to see my family that is still out there and staying connected to my Portuguese background.
