The UMass Lowell Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department is currently the largest department in the Francis College of Engineering, and is poised for many more exciting changes, as well as continued success, in the years to come.
Programs of Study
The Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department offers an extensive range of graduate and undergraduate programs.
In Fall 2020, we launched our new Bachelor. of Science in Engineering, Industrial Engineering program and welcomed our first cohort of undergraduate and graduate students. We celebrated with members of this first cohort who received their B.S.E. degrees in Spring 2024!
Our Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Mechanical Engineering.
Student Success
We are committed to providing students with the highest-quality learning experiences relevant to the needs of industry and society. Our undergraduate students actively learn in our state-of-the-art hands-on labs and the Lawrence Lin Makerspace, building and testing their designs.
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering undergraduate students can combine their undergraduate major program with one of many compatible minors offered at the university.
Our students continue to demonstrate their outstanding abilities when participating in and winning national design competitions.

Within the Department are 33 full-time faculty members with distinguished academic, research and industrial backgrounds. Mechanical Engineering faculty are award-winning researchers and dedicated academics with the highest level of commitment to providing their students with a quality education and rewarding experience at UMass Lowell.
