Satellite Accumulation Area regulations are described in the provisions of the Massachusetts Hazardous Waste Regulations found at 310 CMR 30.340(6), 30.351(4), and 30.353(6)(i).

Satellite Accumulation Area Requirements

  • The SAA location shall be at or near where waste is being generated. If you must walk a long way or pass through a doorway, then your SAA is too far away from the point of generation.
  • The SAA shall be under the control and management of the generators.
  • There can only be one active container of any waste stream in an SAA.
  • Full, dated containers shall be removed from the SAA area within 72 hours.
  • There can be no more than 55 gallons of hazardous waste stored in a SAA at any time.
  • For Acutely hazardous or “P-listed” chemical wastes there can be no more than one quart present in an SAA. A full list of "P-listed" materials can be found at the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) website.
  • Only hazardous waste is to be kept inside of an SAA area. Virgin chemicals, empty bottles, and squeeze bottles should be kept separate.
  • The SAA shall be inspected once per week by a trained lab worker.
