Hazardous Waste Container Requirements:
- Container Condition and Compatibility:
- Hazardous waste must be collected in structurally sound containers that are compatible with the waste being stored.
- Containers must be kept tightly closed at all times except when waste is actively being added.
- Use of Funnels:
- If a funnel is used to fill a container, it must either be removed and the container tightly closed when not in use, or the funnel must be securely attached to the container’s bung hole and equipped with a cover that can be tightly closed.
- Proper Labeling:
- Containers must be clearly labeled with:
- The words "Hazardous Waste".
- The proper chemical name(s) of the waste inside.
- The associated hazards (e.g., flammable, corrosive).
- Labels can be provided by Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) upon request.
- Storage Surface and Separation:
- Containers must be placed on impenetrable surfaces to prevent contamination in case of leaks.
- Wastes must be kept separate from incompatible materials and chemicals.
- Physical barriers such as dikes, berms, or walls may be required to ensure safe segregation.
- Weekly Inspections:
- A trained laboratory worker must inspect the containers weekly for signs of deterioration or leaks.
- Damaged containers must be promptly repaired or replaced to prevent hazards.
- Date Marking When Full:
- When a container reaches its capacity, it must be marked immediately with the date it became full.
- A new waste container may be started during this 72-hour period.
- Timely Removal:
- Full containers must be relocated to the designated accumulation area within three days.
