The Office of Hazardous Materials Operations (Haz-Ops) at UMass Lowell is dedicated to ensuring the safe and compliant handling, transfer, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste generated across the University. Our mission is to protect human health, safety, and the environment while maintaining adherence to federal, state, and local regulations governing hazardous materials.

To successfully manage hazardous waste on campus, the active participation and cooperation of all UMass Lowell faculty, staff, and students are essential. This includes understanding and fulfilling your responsibilities related to hazardous waste management.

If you are involved in activities that generate hazardous waste, you are directly responsible for ensuring the proper handling of that waste, including the management of Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAAs). SAAs are designated locations near the point of waste generation where hazardous waste can be temporarily stored. Proper management includes:

• Ensuring containers are properly labeled and securely closed when not in use.

• Keeping incompatible wastes segregated to prevent reactions.

• Regularly inspecting the area to ensure compliance with safety guidelines.

Failure to manage hazardous waste correctly can lead to environmental harm, safety risks, and noncompliance with regulations, which may result in penalties for the University.

To support you in managing hazardous waste, Haz-Ops offers resources, training, and assistance. If you have any questions, require guidance, or need assistance in managing your hazardous waste or SAA, please contact Hazardous Operations at: Hazardous_Receiving@uml.edu

Let’s work together to ensure UMass Lowell remains a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible institution.
