The String Project is...

The UMass Lowell String Project is a music education initiative designed to achieve four major outcomes:

  1. Provide high-quality, low cost string instrument instruction to students in grades 2-12.
  2. Encourage participants to cultivate a lifelong love of the performing arts.
  3. Demonstrate how music builds positive relationships with peers and the community.
  4. Offer UMass Lowell music students the opportunity to gain experience and skills required to be effective educators and community leaders.

The String Project is a member of the National String Project Consortium, which is composed of over 40 String Projects located at major universities around the country. In 2014, we were named "String Project of the Year" by the National String Project Consortium and the American String Teachers Association!

In the Spring of 2022, UMass Lowell celebrated its 20th Anniversary! Check out this article and the accompanying video, "String Project Turns 20," by Katharine Webster.
