About Us
The College Writing sequence provides students with the tools they need to navigate a variety of writing situations, and our small class sizes allow students ample one-on-one time with professors. Our classrooms are workshop spaces in which students are challenged every day to improve their writing. Our faculty are committed to helping students develop themselves as thinkers and professionals.
The First Year Writing Program offers programming to promote student engagement in the academic and social communities on campus. We also partner with The Writing Center, the English Department, and the College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences to co-sponsor writing workshops, visits by guest speakers and authors, and a variety of writing opportunities. In the fall and spring semesters, we hold essay contests to celebrate great student writing. Additionally, our faculty mentor students presenting research for the annual student research symposium.
The UMass Lowell custom edition of A Writer’s Reference, 8th edition by Diana Hacker and Nancy Sommers is the required text for all students in College Writing. Our faculty wrote the front index material which provides students with a quick reference directory of on campus resources and provides helpful tips that foster student success in college.
