With the core goal protecting the University community and campus buildings from fire and other potential hazards, the UMass Lowell fire protection shop is responsible for the maintenance and repair of fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, elevators, emergency generators, exit signage, emergency lighting and emergency phones. The team also oversees the upgrade and replacement of existing fire alarm systems and elevators by outside contractors.
The fire protection shop works with departments throughout the University and local fire departments to maintain the highest safety standards and ensure the University’s full compliance with regulations. For example, the team is currently collaborating with the University's Police Department to research a new emergency phone system that includes a computerized self-testing feature and video cameras.
