What is MANUAL?
Beginning in the Fall Semester of 2023, UMass Lowell (UML) has partnered with Manual to provide all students with access to comprehensive men’s wellness and personal development guidance via their online platform. This service is focused on serving marginalized student populations, those most at risk of developing behavioral health issues, and men of color by providing them with online video tutorials, weekly newsletters, monthly livestreams, and customized resource pages. This service is available to all UMass Lowell students.
Background
The gender gap in college enrollment has been growing for decades, with the latest data showing that women make up 57 percent of U.S. undergraduates1. The pandemic has only widened that gap: In the fall of 2020, male undergraduate enrollment fell by nearly 7 percent, nearly three times as much as female enrollment dropped, according to the National Student Clearinghouse. The decline was the steepest — and the gender gap the largest — among students of color attending community colleges (Source: Pew Research Center: What’s behind the growing gap between men and women in college completion?).
