This award recognizes the accomplishments of students for significant achievements in advancing the university’s goals in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and social justice through service, advocacy, community outreach initiatives, and/or research at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Graduating students enrolled in graduate, undergraduate and online and continuing education programs are eligible.
Personal Statement for the Diversity & Inclusion Medal
Applicants are required to submit a Personal statement no longer than 750 words that demonstrates leadership in one or more of the following areas:
- Advocacy for the diversity, equity, and inclusion of underrepresented groups.
- Leadership and a sustained commitment to the advancement of a diverse and inclusive culture.
- Sponsorship or active promotion of programs, initiatives or projects that advance equity, access, and the respect of human dignity in the pursuit of justice and peace.
- Collaboration with campus or community groups in the creation, sponsorship, and implementation of programs, initiatives, or projects in the area of diversity, inclusion or in ally-ship to other communities.
Applications for the diversity & inclusion medal will be judged on the following criteria:
- Demonstration of a sustained commitment to the values of diversity, inclusion, and social justice by documented efforts that are above and beyond the routine expectations of the work or project.
- Evidence of exceptional efforts to promote a University environment that is free from bias and discrimination.
- Substantiation of the contribution that the individual has made towards advancing diversity and inclusion.
Recommendation for Diversity & Inclusion
Candidates must submit recommendation letters (a minimum of two, maximum of three) from UMass Lowell supervisors, advisors, faculty and/or staff. Committee members cannot write recommendations.
Eligibility
- Students who have completed their degree in December 2023
- Graduating students who expect to receive their degree in May 2024
- Undergraduate students who have a 2.000 minimum GPA
- Graduate students who have a minimum 3.000 GPA
- Students who are in good disciplinary standing (not on disciplinary probation)
A new application must be completed for each award a student applies for and all applications are due by Feb. 21, 2024 at Midnight.
