Eligibility & Requirements

The Chancellor’s Medal for Student Service is awarded to members of the graduating senior class who have made outstanding contributions to the university (clubs and organizations, campus programs, leadership position, or other activities that improve the quality of life for students at the University of Massachusetts Lowell) during their undergraduate studies in day or online and continuing education programs.

The applicant's last four years of service during their college tenure will be taken into account. Positions of leadership with some form of remuneration (salary, housing, credit) should be included. Strictly volunteer efforts will be given special consideration in the selection process.

Personal Statement for Student Service

Applicants are required to submit a Personal statement no longer than 750 words that demonstrates leadership in one or more of the following areas:

• Leadership in clubs, athletics or any other leadership role on campus
• Sponsorship or active promotion of programs, initiatives or projects that improve the quality of life for students at UMass Lowell
• Collaboration with campus or community groups in the creation, sponsorship, and implementation of programs, initiatives, or projects.

Recommendation for Student Service

Candidates must submit recommendation letters (a minimum of two, maximum of three) from UMass Lowell supervisors, advisors, faculty and/or staff. Committee members cannot write recommendations.

Eligibility

• Students who have completed their degree in December 2024
• Graduating students who expect to receive their degree in May 2025
• Undergraduate students who have a 2.00 minimum GPA
• Student who are in good disciplinary standing (not on disciplinary probation)
• Graduate students are ineligible for the Student Service Award

A new application must be completed for each award a student applies for and all applications are due by Feb. 28, 2025 at 5 p.m.

This award recognizes the accomplishments of students for significant achievements in advancing the university’s goals in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and social justice through service, advocacy, community outreach initiatives, and/or research at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Graduating students enrolled in graduate, undergraduate and online and continuing education programs are eligible.

Personal Statement for the Diversity & Inclusion Medal

Applicants are required to submit a Personal statement no longer than 750 words that demonstrates leadership in one or more of the following areas:

• Advocacy for the diversity, equity, and inclusion of underrepresented groups.
• Leadership and a sustained commitment to the advancement of a diverse and inclusive culture.
• Sponsorship or active promotion of programs, initiatives or projects that advance equity, access, and the respect of human dignity in the pursuit of justice and peace.
• Collaboration with campus or community groups in the creation, sponsorship, and implementation of programs, initiatives, or projects in the area of diversity, inclusion or in ally-ship to other communities.

Applications for the diversity & inclusion medal will be judged on the following criteria:

• Demonstration of a sustained commitment to the values of diversity, inclusion, and social justice by documented efforts that are above and beyond the routine expectations of the work or project.
• Evidence of exceptional efforts to promote a University environment that is free from bias and discrimination.
• Substantiation of the contribution that the individual has made towards advancing diversity and inclusion.

The Chancellor’s Medal for Community Service is awarded to university students who have made significant contributions to the public good (volunteer efforts which benefit the Greater Lowell Community, other communities, or other organizations) and thus have brought credit to themselves, the university and the larger community.

This award is usually presented to students who have shown commitment and dedication to community service efforts over an extended period of time. Graduating students enrolled in graduate, undergraduate and online and continuing education programs are eligible.

Personal Statement for the Community Service

Applicants are required to submit a Personal statement no longer than 750 words that demonstrates leadership in one or more of the following areas:

• The statement should include the most significant contributions to the public good.
• Please discuss your volunteer efforts which benefit the Greater Lowell Community or other organizations.

Recommendation for Community Service

Candidates must submit recommendation letters (a minimum of two, maximum of three) from UMass Lowell supervisors, advisors, faculty and/or staff. Recommenders can come from the greater surrounding community, in the case of the community service award.

• Undergraduate students who have a 2.00 minimum GPA
• Graduate students who have a minimum 3.00 GPA
