Kennedy College of Sciences Dean Recognized for Contributions

Noureddine Melikechi, Dean of the Kennedy College of Sciences, has been elected as a Fellow of the Optical Society of America. Melikechi has been recognized "for pioneering scientific, technological and educational contributions to optics, including novel methodologies in laser induced breakdown spectroscopy for space exploration and cancer diagnosis."
Founded in 1916, OSA is the leading professional association in optics and photonics, home to accomplished science, engineering, and business leaders from all over the world. Serving a worldwide constituency of 19,275 members, OSA promotes the generation, application and archiving of knowledge in optics and photonics and to disseminate this knowledge worldwide.
The OSA Fellow Members Committee reviews nominations submitted by current OSA Fellows, then recommends candidates to the OSA Awards Committee and OSA Board of Directors. No more than 10 percent of the total OSA membership, about 19,000, may be chosen as Fellows, making the process both highly selective and competitive. As a reflection of The Optical Society’s global reach, 60 percent of this year’s newly elected Fellows reside outside the United States. OSA fellows are members who have served the field of optics and photonics with distinction through their scientific, technological, educational, innovations contributions.
