Across the Northeast and other parts of the U.S., wood burning is an important source of fuel for heat and power. For decades, wood stoves and outdoor wood boilers have provided heat to homes. More recently, public policy has promoted the development of bioenergy, including new installations of wood biomass boilers to heat larger buildings such as schools or office complexes, or to provide power to the grid.
The Lowell Center for Sustainable Production is raising awareness about health risks from wood combustion and promoting solutions via technological advances and programmatic and policy change.
