A "foggy climate" is one where expectations and criteria for success are not clear. Thus the goals of the WAVES Foggy Climate Initiative are to reduce ambiguity around workload expectations and high stakes decisions that affect faculty lives.
Since proposed action steps need support from the upper administration, our Deans of Engineering and FAHSS co-chair this aspect of the WAVES transformation effort. As a unionized campus, we work closely with the Massachusetts Society of Professors (MSP). The Foggy Climate Initiative involves three main thrusts:
- Establish detailed decision-making procedures for high stakes decisions (e.g. hiring, reviews and P&T decisions)
- Analyze and promote gender equity around service assignments
- Review university policies that affect gender equity
