The UMass Lowell Police Department is committed to building partnerships with the community to ensure that the campus remains a safe place to work, study and live. Our goal is to understand and educate our campus community. We strive to work closely with faculty, students, staff and visitors, to create a clear line of communication between the department and the community. We accomplish these goals by providing community-based policing as well as education and awareness programs for the UMass Lowell community.
What is Community Policing?
Community policing is a collaborative effort between a police department and the community that identifies problems of crime and disorder and involves all elements of the community in the search for solutions to these problems. It's proven that close ties are beneficial to both the police agency and its community members.
At the center of community policing are three essential and complementary core components:
- Partnerships between the police and the community
- Problem solving as a method to identify and resolve problems of concern
- Education through programs and training
