First Year Seminar in Honors (FYSH)

HONR 1100: First Year Seminar in Honors (FYSH) is your introduction to the collaborative, interdisciplinary, you are more than your major ethos of the UMass Lowell Honors College. FYSH is a Lecture/Recitation Course. For this course you have both a Recitation section (synchronous in-person) and a Lecture (asynchronous online). 
Your Recitation appears on your schedule, your Lecture appears only on Blackboard.

A few more details about FYSH

  • Fulfills either the College Writing I Requirement or a Core Curriculum Arts and Humanities Requirement (H1) if you have AP credit for College Writing I  
  • Provides information about on and off-campus opportunities and experiences (Internships, Fellowships etc.) as well as university resources 
  • Assists with cohort-building, getting to know faculty, and familiarizing yourselves with the University and the City of Lowell 
  • Is a space for reflection on and consideration of what you want out of your experience at UMass Lowell 
  • Introduces you to interdisciplinarity and experiential project-based learning 
  • Encourages engagement with the Honors Community 
  • Uses the City of Lowell and the University as a text and living laboratory 
  • Introduces concepts of critical AI literacy
