First Year Seminar in Honors (FYSH)
HONR 1100: First Year Seminar in Honors (FYSH) is your introduction to the collaborative, interdisciplinary, you are more than your major ethos of the UMass Lowell Honors College. FYSH is a Lecture/Recitation Course. For this course you have both a Recitation section (synchronous in-person) and a Lecture (asynchronous online).
Your Recitation appears on your schedule, your Lecture appears only on Blackboard.
A few more details about FYSH
- Fulfills either the College Writing I Requirement or a Core Curriculum Arts and Humanities Requirement (H1) if you have AP credit for College Writing I
- Provides information about on and off-campus opportunities and experiences (Internships, Fellowships etc.) as well as university resources
- Assists with cohort-building, getting to know faculty, and familiarizing yourselves with the University and the City of Lowell
- Is a space for reflection on and consideration of what you want out of your experience at UMass Lowell
- Introduces you to interdisciplinarity and experiential project-based learning
- Encourages engagement with the Honors Community
- Uses the City of Lowell and the University as a text and living laboratory
- Introduces concepts of critical AI literacy

All students enrolled in HONR 1100 complete the FYSH Badge as part of their grade, but there are many ways to complete the FYSH Badge | Recitations are taught by different faculty and sections may not have identical assignments, though they all involve research and writing |
