Applied Technology Performance is available as a primary instrument area for all music majors. UMass Lowell does not mandate specific technology, though some possible examples include:
- Synthesizers
- Computers using music software
- Grid controllers
- MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) controllers
- Gestural controllers
- Mobile devices
- Turntables
- Technology-enhanced acoustic instruments
Students with music technology as their primary instrument must meet all audition requirements and panel evaluations requirements, as well as meeting all learning outcomes for our traditional instruments by using technology in creative and expressive musical performances. It is essential that the use of technology is performative. Playback of certain elements from a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) or other device is acceptable only in support of the live performance using technology.
For the audition, UMass Lowell will provide a public address (PA) system and access to electric power. All other technology must be provided by the student. Additionally, all software must be legally licensed. It is not permissible to audition using pirated or “cracked" software.
Again, the primary focus is on performance, and the expectation is a high degree of preparation and professionalism.
