The Structural Dynamics and Acoustic Systems Laboratory (SDASL) focuses on research related to analytical and experimental problems in the areas of structural and acoustic systems. The main thrust of the SDASL is to develop, employ and improve techniques to solve these problems using analytical approaches that are verified through experimental techniques.

Biosketch
Peter Avitabile joined the University in 1985 after having worked in industry for over 10 years. His industrial and university experience of over 4 decades includes finite element modeling, experimental structural dynamic modeling, correlation of analytical and experimental data, integration of analytical and experimental data to provide better component and system model representations for structural response. Avitabile is well known both nationally and internationally for his contributions to the field of structural dynamic modeling techniques. He has written over 300 journal, conference and magazine articles over his career and has made over 200 live industrial seminars on material related to analytical and experimental structural dynamic modeling techniques for hardware/software vendors and professional societies. He has also been a consultant to a wide variety of companies over his career.

Research Currently in Progress
- Measuring nonlinear displacement and strain response at sparse measurement locations and to predict model full space response (displacement and strain) using linear modal modeling approaches
- Developing time, frequency and modal approaches to neutralize the effects of testing differences moving from the field environment to the laboratory environment; goal is to provide realistic vibration testing profiles mimicking the field response in the laboratory.
- Utilizing optical displacement and strain measurements with motion magnification to predict full field response from limited line of sight measurements.
- Incorporating strain profiles in vibration testing feedback loop to achieve realistic damage for device under test response.
