About Academic Alerts

Identifying students who may need additional support and connecting them with campus resources has been a key student success initiative at UMass Lowell (UML) since 2005.

Academic Alerts submitted by UMass Lowell faculty get directly connected with a professional advisor from the Centers for Learning, Advising and Student Success which includes professional advisors housed within academic colleges. The professional advisors conduct targeted outreach to the student to connect with them and ensure they know how to access resources available to them across campus for their success.

There are four regularly scheduled alert periods where faculty are directly solicited for feedback about students in their coursework. In addition to these four scheduled alerts, faculty have the opportunity to submit an "anytime" alert for any student at any point throughout the course term. Below is a list of UMass Lowell academic alerts:

  • Never Attended: Typically occurs toward the end of add/drop in an effort to ensure students are attending their coursework.
  • Early Alert: Typically occurs around the fourth week of the semester and targets gateway courses across undergraduate programs
  • Midterm Alert: Occurs at midpoint of semester for all coursework.
  • Final Alert: Typically occurs before final day to withdraw from coursework.
  • Anytime Academic Referral Alert - available for all UML courses
