How To Become an AMPP Advisor

Advisors play a crucial role in the AMPP program. Advisors partake in workshops every other week. During these sessions, activities and discussions are used to guide the sessions held for their advisees the following week.

Ideally, we hope advisor-advisee(s) pairs participate in the program.

Faculty who are (a) advising early-phase doctoral students or (b) expecting to advise doctoral students in the near future are encouraged to apply for the AMPP.

“I really enjoyed the program and learned a lot. I would be happy to recommend your program to any faculty.”

  • Alessandro Sabato, Ph.D., P.E.
    Mechanical Engineering

"I attended the AMPP workshops together with my two Ph.D. students and one post-doc. The AMPP provided me with tools to be a better mentor, learn how to communicate expectations with students, and also listen to what students were expressing."

  • Frederic Chain, Ph.D.
    Biology

“The program provided new ideas and resources to establish a formal framework for effectively communicating expectations and career goals from both the mentor and mentee. I thought having my student also participate in the program was especially important to understand mentorship from a different perspective and to reinforce our commitment to open dialogue.”

  • Scott Stapleton, Ph.D.
    Mechanical Engineering

“The AMPP gave me the opportunity to contemplate my current mentoring practices: what the goals were for me and my students and how I could foster a relationship where those goals could be realized. Overall, I would recommend the AMPP for anyone who would like to take their mentoring to a new level.”

  • Kelly Socia, Ph.D
    Criminal Justice

"The AMPP program was an interesting, helpful, and eye opening experience. It covers a number of key skills relating to successfully advising graduate students, and I believe the program has improved my mentor-mentee relationships by providing concrete and actionable recommendations on how to successfully navigate the advising process and improving advisor-advisee communication and expectations. I would recommend this program to anyone who advises graduate students."
