The National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored UMLSAMP program helps students create community around STEM.

The UMLSAMP initiative, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and spearheaded by the University of Massachusetts Boston, aims to strengthen a community of research, culture and learning for underrepresented and underserved students pursuing undergraduate degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields at alliance institutions.

Program Participation:

Participants in UMLSAMP will gain access to:

  • Research Preparation: Enhance your research skills through lab experience, project work, and faculty mentorship.
  • Professional Workshops: Attend skills development workshops designed to hone your professional skills and prepare you for a STEM career.
  • Opportunities to share and present your research.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a U.S Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be an undergraduate enrolled full-time in a STEM discipline at UMass Lowell.
  • Participants must commit at least 75 hours each semester. Note: participation is not possible during Co-Op periods.
  • Applicants without a lab mentor will receive assistance to find one upon acceptance into the program.

Although every applicant has a chance of being selected, special effort will be made to recognize under served groups and those having limited participation in a STEM-degree track (African Americans, Chicano/Latino Americans, Native Americans, Natives of U.S. Pacific Islands and certain populations of Asian-Americans., for example, those from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, etc.)

Selected UMLSAMP participants will receive an award of $1,750 upon completion of designated hours each semester.

The application period for this fellowship has closed. Please visit us again in early spring 2025 for next opportunity to apply.

Students are encouraged to also take advantage of the STEP program, which exposes students to research and also prepares you to be an UMLSAMP participant.
