Biosketch

Randal W. Tustison, Ph.D., is a Materials Scientist with over 35 years of industrial research and development experience.  He joined Raytheon Research Division in 1978, becoming Manager of Advanced Materials Department in 1990 and Materials Engineering Department Manager from 2000 until 2009, assuming responsibility for all facets of materials engineering from research and development through product development and test to whole life support.  In addition, he presided over Raytheon’s Lexington Laboratory facility from 2000 until it closed in 2003.

From 2009 to 2014 he was Principal Fellow and staff member of the Mechanical Engineering Directorate at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems (IDS). He was also Mechanical, Materials and Structures Technology Area Champion for Raytheon Company, as well as Materials Technology Director for IDS. In these roles, he was involved with internal and contract research and development touching on materials and mechanical engineering science. In addition, Tustison was a capture manager within the Advanced Technology Directorate of IDS, a position he held until 2014.

Dr. Tustison has been active in the area of optical materials and coatings development his entire career. He is currently a member of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) Executive Program Committee and is serving on the Program Committee for SPIE’s 2015 Defense, Security and Sensing ― Window and Dome Technologies and Materials XIV Conference. He was the Chair of the conference from 2005 until 2013 and was the editor of Volumes V through XIII of the conference proceedings.

Prior to joining Raytheon, Tustison was a Research Associate in the physics department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society, as well as the American Vacuum Society, where he is past president of its Vacuum Technology Division and served on the Board of Directors from 1986 to 1991.  He has served on the DoD Militarily Critical Technology Working Group - Optical Materials as well as on the Industrial Advisory Board of the University of Massachusetts – Lowell Center for High-Rate Nanomanufacturing.  Tustison is currently serving on the Executive Advisory Board of the University of Massachusetts Lowell Nanomanufacturing Center.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from Purdue University, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in materials science and metallurgical engineering from the University of Illinois. He has published over 50 papers in scientific journals, holds 19 U.S. and foreign patents and is an author of the book Chemical Vapor Deposited Zinc Sulfide.
