Jean Arnaud currently works on two projects under the supervision of Timothy Ford, Ph.D., of the Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences department. Through support from the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production and the Lucy Henderson Trust, Jean received the International Sustainability Fellow award. This fellowship supports the first project, which aims to enhance a molecular biology educational program at University of Notre Dame of Hinche in Haiti. The goal is to transition from a theory-only program to one that includes more practical, hands-on experience while minimizing the use of toxic chemicals and promoting research activities in environmental monitoring and rapid pathogen identification. The second project, funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), represents a collaborative effort with the Wabanaki Nations - Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, Penobscot and Passamaquoddy peoples - on their ancestral lands across what is now called Maine. This project seeks to integrate indigenous and scientific knowledge to support environmental risk assessments following the construction and removal of dams across watersheds in the region. Throughout his journey, Jean remains committed to leveraging science for social good, working alongside communities to build a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
