Global policy and the care economy: A discussion of the International Labour Organization report on Care Work and the Future of Decent Work

Laura Addati is a Policy Specialist on Women’s Economic Empowerment at the ILO Office for the United Nations in New York and the Gender, Equality and Diversity & ILO AIDS Branch (GED/ILOAIDS) of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

She currently works on gender equality at work in a joint EU, UN Women and ILO project on promoting women’s economic empowerment in G7 countries. She has coordinated ILO research on care work, maternity protection and work-family policies, co-authoring a number of ILO reports and publications.

Eleonor Faur

Eleonor Faur is a sociologist and Full Professor at the National University of San Martín and a Researcher at the Institute for Economic and Social Development (IDES, Argentina).

She researches on the areas of Gender, Social Policies and Inequalities, focusing on the Political and Social Organization of Care and its different outcomes for different social groups.

She is a partner collaborator on the Gender, Migration and Work of Care project. She led UNFPA office in Argentina for 7 years, and worked as a consultant for UNICEF, UNDP as well as Governmental Agencies and NGOs.

Susan Himmelweit is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the Open University and Visiting Professor at the Department of Gender Studies at the London School of Economics. She is a feminist economist who research focuses on intra-household inequalities, the economics and policy of caring and the gender implications of economic and social policy.

She is the coordinator of the policy advisory group of the Women’s Budget Group, the UK’s gender budgeting think tank, and was its founding chair.

Sonya Michel is a professor emerita of history, Women’s and Gender Studies and American Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, USA. Her research focuses on women and social policy, both historical and contemporary, in the U.S. and in comparative perspective.

She has been a sub-project leader in the project on Gender, Migration and the Work of Care based at the University of Toronto and, with Ito Peng, co-edited Gender, Migration and the Work of Care: A Multi-Scalar Approach to the Pacific Rim.

Mignon Duffy is CWW Senior Associate; Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, Co-Chair of the Carework Network at UMass Lowell.

Mignon Duffy is Chair of the Sociology Department and an Associate at the Center for Women & Work at UMass Lowell, and serves on the Carework Network Steering Committee.

Her scholarship focuses on paid care workers, and she has published two books about the care labor force (Making Care Count: One Hundred Years of Gender, Race and Paid Care Work and Caring on the Clock: The Complexities and Contradictions of Paid Care).

She has also been involved in work on the care economy in policy contexts, including with the United Nations.
