The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Student Disability Services are welcoming new first-year, graduate and transfer students with a three-day “Student Success Summit” this week, conducted with partners across the university.
Workshops focus on academic resources and strategies, navigating the other aspects of college, and preparing for a well-balanced year, says Leslie Wong, dean of equity and inclusion.
This year, the two offices also co-sponsored a one-day Student Success Summit 2.0 for sophomores who have never been on campus before. The day featured walking tours, information on using UML’s dining and transportation services, resources and tips for personal wellbeing, and social activities.
“It was a day for students to reconnect, this time in person,” Wong says. “The focus of all these events is to find your community, find your go-to people, and find your way around campus.”
Multicultural Affairs sponsors more than 30 clubs for students who want to meet others with similar identities, including LGBTQ+ and international students. It will also be celebrating the opening of the new Social Justice and LGBTQ+ centers in University Crossing on Sept. 1. Both offer space where students can meet, attend workshops and find resources.
Disability Services can help with accommodations, including assistive technology and access to a special testing center in the CLASS complex on North Campus.
