‘Flight of Remembrance’ Shares Family’s World War II Story
When and where: Wednesday, Feb. 5, 10 a.m. University Suites, Room 106A, 327 Aiken St., Lowell
What: “Flight of Remembrance,” led by author Marina Kirsch, will share stories of her family’s experiences during World War II in Latvia, occupied Poland and Germany – where her father was drafted into Hitler’s air force – before they immigrated to America. Kirsch’s father went on to play a key role in the United States’ emerging space program. The event is one in a series presented by UMass Lowell’s Learning in Retirement Association (LIRA), which offers free enrichment programs and activities. Business Guru Shares Leadership Philosophies
When and where: Thursday, Feb. 6, 12:30 p.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: Business consultant Chris Laszlo, an expert in management and sustainability, will explore how meditation, art, exercise and spending time in nature can enhance the job performance of CEOs and other professionals. The program, which is free and open to the campus and community, draws on findings in his book, “Quantum Leadership: New Consciousness.” The event is one in the Distinguished Speaker Series presented by UMass Lowell’s Donahue Center for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility. Photo Exhibit Focuses in on the Azores
When and where: Artists’ reception, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 5:30 p.m. Exhibit runs through Friday, Feb. 28, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. University Crossing second floor, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: The exhibit “Seeing the Archipelago” will feature photographs taken by UMass Lowell students who traveled to the Azores as part of a class on documentary imaging that also taught them about the history of immigrants who came from the islands to Lowell. The students – who hail from communities including Boston, Methuen, Lawrence, Tyngsborough and Wakefield, along with Afton, Va. – will also share what they learned through the study abroad experience at an artists’ reception. Paulo Teves, the Azores’ regional director for communities, is expected to offer remarks at the event. Both the reception and exhibit are free and open to the campus and community. Economist Examines Housing Market Forecast at Free Event
When and where: Thursday, Feb. 20, 11:45 a.m., UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell
What: Robert Dietz, chief economist for the National Association of Homebuilders, will address the latest economic and housing forecast and the outlook for a possible recession at “The Housing Affordability Crisis.” The free program is the latest in UMass Lowell’s Lunchtime Lecture series, which engages the campus and public in educational and cultural topics of interest. The event is presented in partnership with the Moses Greeley Parker Lectures. Members of the public who would like to attend should email community@uml.edu by Friday, Feb. 14 to register.
