Free Event Traces History of Famous Shipwreck
When and where: Wednesday, Jan. 15, 10 a.m. O’Leary Library Mezzanine, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell
What: The history behind the 1816 sinking of the French frigate La Medusa, the famous painting it inspired and the discovery of the ship’s wreckage more than a century later will be recounted by Charles Mazel, the technical director of the expedition that found the vessel’s remains off the coast of Africa. The event will be presented by UMass Lowell’s Learning in Retirement Association (LIRA), which offers enrichment classes and activities. Free parking will be available in the nearby Wilder Lot. River Hawks Honor Military Personnel, Veterans
When and where: Saturday, Jan. 18, 6 p.m. Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell
What: Active-duty personnel and veterans from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces will be honored during Military Appreciation Night as the UMass Lowell nationally ranked men’s ice hockey River Hawks take on the Merrimack College Warriors in Hockey East action. Tickets to the game for all fans are available at the Tsongas Center box office, at www.tsongascenter.com or by calling 866-722-8780.
Lowell Mill Girls’ Place in History Explored at Free Program
When and where: Wednesday, Jan. 29, 10 a.m. Campus Recreation Center, East Campus, 322 Aiken St., Lowell
What: The cultural contributions and experiences of young women who worked in Lowell’s textile factories in the mid-1800s will be examined at a free program for the public led by Bridget Marshall, a UMass Lowell associate professor of English who has conducted extensive research on the topic. The program is offered through the university’s Learning in Retirement Association (LIRA). Members of the public who would like more information should email lira@uml.edu.
Entrepreneurs, Venture Capitalists to Lead Forum on Funding
When and where: Tuesday, Feb. 4, 5:30 p.m. Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2), UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, Fourth Floor, 110 Canal St., Lowell. Note: This event is rescheduled from Wednesday, Jan. 8.
What: Medical device and biotechnology entrepreneurs can learn more about venture funding for startups from experts in the field. Speakers are scheduled to include Bill Yelle, a faculty member in UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business and entrepreneur-in-residence at Partners Innovation Fund; Nancy Briefs, co-founder and CEO of Altrix Bio; Dr. Maria Berkman, director, Broadview Ventures; and Vinit Nijhawan, interim executive director at the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center. The event is presented by the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2), a joint venture of UMass Lowell and UMass Medical School that helps medical-device and biotech startups bridge the gap between idea and market.
