In this complicated era of the coronavirus, the political landscape is changing quickly. Politics and public opinion expert John Cluverius is available for interviews on the many issues in that arena brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
These issues include:
- Restrictions on normal behavior by individuals, businesses and organizations in the interest of public health, which Cluverius says pose political challenges because of the typical unpopularity of such steps and difficulty in quantifying success;
- President Trump’s desire to return the nation to normal operations by Easter, which Cluverius says may be due in part to the history of presidents receiving blame for economic conditions, potentially even more of concern during an election year;
- Political polarization is affecting how Americans are responding to directives such as social distancing, according to Cluverius.
Cluverius is the associate director of the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion and an assistant professor of political science. Before joining the university, he worked as a political operative for a variety of candidates for elective office and interest groups.
