Philosophy and Film Series Tackles ‘Die Hard’
When and where: Monday, Nov. 25, 7 p.m. Luna Theater, Mill No. 5, Fourth Floor, 250 Jackson St., Lowell
What: Marking the 30th anniversary of its release, the action-thriller “Die Hard” starring Bruce Willis will be screened at a free event for the public. The movie features Willis as police Det. John McClane, who works to free hostages trapped in a Los Angeles high-rise on Christmas Eve. After the showing, UMass Lowell Philosophy Assistant Prof. Elvira Basevich will lead a discussion about the feminist issues raised in the film at the program, part of UMass Lowell’s “Philosophy and Film” series. Immigrants’ Impact on Mill Cities Explored at Free Program
When and where: Wednesday, Dec. 4, 6 p.m. UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, Harbor Place, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill
What: “The World Comes to Massachusetts: 100 Years of Immigration History in Mill Cities” will be presented by UMass Lowell Distinguished University Professor Robert Forrant, an expert on local and American history. Free and open to the public, the program is the latest in the UMass Lowell Innovation Hub’s Cultural Speaker Series. Holiday Fair Features Work of Women Crafters, Artists
When and where: Thursday, Dec. 5, 3 to 7 p.m. UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell
What: Women artisans, crafters and entrepreneurs who are UMass Lowell graduates, faculty, staff and friends of the university, will showcase their goods at the annual Women’s Works Holiday Art and Craft Fair. The free event for the public features handmade jewelry, knitted items, food, paintings and more for sale and includes performances, an art show and a silent auction. Plastics that Mimic Proteins, DNA are Focus of Research Event
When and where: Friday, Dec. 6, 8:45 a.m. UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell
What: Research into plastics that mimic proteins and DNA will be presented by UMass Lowell Chemistry Assistant Prof. James Reuther at the Tripathy Memorial Symposium, which unites faculty and industry researchers from across the country to share their groundbreaking work. Now in its 19th year, the free event for the campus and community is named for the late Sukant Tripathy, a UMass Lowell chemistry professor who served as director of the Center for Advanced Materials, provost and vice chancellor during his career. A Cappella Concert Celebrates Talented Student Vocalists
When and where: Sunday, Dec. 8, 2 p.m. Comley-Lane Theatre, Mahoney Hall, South Campus, 870 Broadway St., Lowell
What: UMass Lowell students who perform in the singing groups Fermata Nowhere, Hawkapella, the Hawkettes and Vocality will join forces to stage their Fall A Cappella Showcase for the campus and community. Admission is $10 per person for the public, $5 for high school students and free for UMass Lowell students with an ID.
