Acclaimed UMass Lowell Authors Talk about Their Craft
When and where: Tuesday, Nov. 12, 5:30 p.m. O’Leary Library Learning Commons, Mezzanine, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell
What: Two of UMass Lowell’s award-winning authors will share their inspiration and read from their works at a free event for the campus and community. Maureen Stanton, associate professor of English, will talk about writing creative nonfiction, including her book about the antiques and collectibles business and her memoir about growing up in Walpole. UMass Lowell graduate Diannely Antigua, a Haverhill native, will share her debut collection of poetry, “Ugly Music.” The program is the latest in the university’s Writers on Campus series. ‘The Lowell Offering’ Shines Light on Lowell’s ‘Mill Girls’
When and where: Friday, Nov. 15, 7 p.m. Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center, 246 Market St., Lowell
What: UMass Lowell’s Bridget Marshall, associate professor of English and an expert on the writings of the Lowell “mill girls” of the 1800s, will speak at an event that will include a dramatic reading of a new play about them. “The Lowell Offering” – named after a magazine written by young women who worked in the city’s textile factories during the American Industrial Revolution – will be presented by the Merrimack Repertory Theatre next year. The free event for the public will provide a sneak peak of the process behind staging the play and share its historic context. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 978-970-5000.
Strategies for Crowdfunding Startups to be Shared at Forum
When and where: Wednesday, Nov. 20, 5:30 p.m. UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, Harbor Place, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill
What: Entrepreneurs looking to tap into the power of crowdfunding to support their startups will hear from a roundtable of investors and financing experts on how to grow their ventures. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be moderated by Michael Ciuchta, an associate professor and authority on marketing and entrepreneurship who teaches in UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business. Medieval, Renaissance Music is Centerpiece of Free Concert
When and where: Wednesday, Nov. 20, 8 p.m. Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell
What: Works from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras will be performed by student vocalists and instrumentalists in UMass Lowell’s Mixed Chamber Ensemble at a free concert for the campus and community. Selections will include chants written by composer Hildegard von Bingen, an aria by Giulio Caccini and “Orfeo” by Claudio Monteverdi, considered by music historians to be the first opera ever written. The ensemble will be conducted by UMass Lowell faculty member Jonathan Richter. Free parking will be available in the nearby Wilder Lot.
