Free Event Celebrates Cambodian Culture, Experience
When and where: Monday, Sept. 23, 5 p.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: “Rekindling the Light of Khmer Arts,” a free event for the public and campus, will celebrate Cambodian culture with a reading from acclaimed author Alan Lightman – whose Harpswell Foundation works to empower the next generation of women in Southeast Asia – and a preview of a documentary about Cambodian dance by UMass Lowell student Chummeng Soun, an art and design major from Lowell. The Angkor Dance Troupe of Lowell will perform and copies of the latest book by Lightman, who received an honorary degree from UMass Lowell in 2010, will be available. The event is presented by UMass Lowell, Middlesex Community College and the Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell. Women Entrepreneurs Share Stories Behind Their Ventures
When and where: Monday, Sept. 23, 5 p.m. Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, Perry Atrium, North Campus, 40 University Ave., Lowell
What: Local women entrepreneurs who are building businesses in the botanicals, marketing, farming and snack food industries will share their challenges and successes at a free program open to the campus and public. Participants in the panel are expected to include HamdAllah Modupe Olona of Goodie Krunch, Kinsey Rosene of Crose Nest Collective, Karen Vasso of Neighbor’s Acre and Susu Wong of Tomo360, along with UMass Lowell graduate Lianna Kushi of Entrepreneurship for All, a startup accelerator that helps individuals with innovative ideas launch ventures in their communities. The event is presented by the Donahue Center for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility and the Jack M. Wilson Center for Entrepreneurship, both of which are part of UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business. Prospective River Hawks Invited to Open Houses
What: Individuals interested in pursuing a UMass Lowell bachelor’s or master’s degree are invited to open houses where they will learn about the university’s academic programs, which are nationally accredited and ranked for quality, return on investment and more. Events are:
- Graduate open house, Saturday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Participants will discover UMass Lowell’s more than 75 options for graduate degrees and more than 70 certificate programs. UMass Lowell will waive the application fee for individuals interested in enrolling who participate in a session on financial aid during the event. - Undergraduate open house, Sunday, Oct. 27, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Exhibits, presentations, a resource fair and campus tours will be offered. New programs include degrees in music composition for new media and nutrition with a concentration in dietetics. Graduates earn some of the highest starting and mid-career salaries in the nation. Venture Capitalist Shares What Makes the Best Startups Sing
When and where: Monday, Sept. 30, 2 p.m. Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, Perry Atrium, North Campus, 40 University Ave., Lowell
What: Venture capitalist and leadership expert Robert Stringer will lead a free program for the campus and community that draws on his experience as the founder and managing partner of Crimson Seed Capital, where he works as an angel investor with more than 30 early-stage companies in the technology, health and wellness, and consumer goods industries. Stringer will also sign copies of his latest book “Culture.com: How the Best Startups Make It Happen.” The Jack M. Wilson Center for Entrepreneurship at UMass Lowell is presenting the event as part of its Entrepreneurship Speaker Series.
