Portrait Artist Shares Work and Inspiration at Free Events

When and where: Artist’s talk – Tuesday, Sept. 17, 3:30 p.m. Weed Hall, Lecture Hall 3, South Campus, 3 Solomont Way, Lowell. Artist’s reception – 5 p.m., University Gallery. Exhibit runs through Wednesday, Oct. 9 in University Gallery, Mahoney Hall, South Campus, 870 Broadway St., Lowell

What: Award-winning American painter Ann Gale will discuss the creative process behind her work at a free talk and artist’s reception that will accompany her “Faces and Figures” exhibit, which is also free and open to the public. The hallmark of Gale’s portraiture is its use of fractured segments of color to depict the human form. She will spend months or even years on a single piece. Gallery hours are Monday, noon to 4 p.m.; Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Members of the public who would like more information should email Deborah_Santoro@uml.edu.

Startup Showcase Highlights New Products

When and where: Wednesday, Sept. 18, 6 p.m. UMass Lowell Innovation Hub Haverhill, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill

What: The UMass Lowell Innovation Hub Haverhill kicks off its monthly Entrepreneurship Development Series with Mass Innovation Nights, a new product showcase highlighting early-stage companies. Four Haverhill-based startups will be featured: Microshare and IT Squared, both of which are based at the iHub business incubator, and Goodie Krunch and Spirit Box. Prospective River Hawks Invited to Open Houses

What: Individuals interested in pursuing a UMass Lowell bachelor’s or master’s degree are invited to open houses where they will learn about the university’s academic programs, which are nationally accredited and ranked for quality, return on investment and more. Events are:

  • Undergraduate open houses, Saturday, Sept. 21 and Sunday, Oct. 27, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Exhibits, presentations, a resource fair and campus tours will be offered. New programs include degrees in music composition for new media and nutrition with a concentration in dietetics. Graduates earn some of the highest starting and mid-career salaries in the nation.   • Graduate open house, Saturday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Participants will discover UMass Lowell’s more than 75 options for graduate degrees and more than 70 certificate programs. UMass Lowell will waive the application fee for individuals interested in enrolling who participate in a session on financial aid during the event. Free Event Celebrates Cambodian Culture, Experience

When and where: Monday, Sept. 23, 5 p.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell

What: “Rekindling the Light of Khmer Arts,” a free event for the university community and public, will celebrate Cambodian culture with a reading from acclaimed author Alan Lightman – whose Harpswell Foundation works to empower the next generation of women in Southeast Asia – and a preview of a documentary about Cambodian dance by UMass Lowell student Chummeng Soun, an art and design major from Lowell. The Angkor Dance Troupe of Lowell will perform and copies of the latest book by Lightman, who received an honorary degree from UMass Lowell in 2010, will be available. The event is presented by UMass Lowell, Middlesex Community College and the Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell.
