Lt. Gov. Polito Helps Kick Off UMass Lowell, Defense Industry Initiative

What: The new UMass Lowell Research Institute will officially open at an event scheduled to include Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, representatives of the U.S. Navy, Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts defense industry and the university.
The new institute will provide vital workforce development programs for Massachusetts defense industry personnel including those in the advanced manufacturing sector. The training will include specialized certificate programs and other curriculum developed by UMass Lowell. To support these efforts, the Institute has received a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA).
In addition, UMass Lowell will work with Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) centers to help startups and other small businesses in Massachusetts leverage university resources and expertise.
The Lincoln location of the institute will also provide Department of Defense employees working at Hanscom Air Force Base and the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center ready access to UMass Lowell scientists and engineers.
Speakers at the event are scheduled to include Polito; UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacquie Moloney; U.S. Navy SBIR Director Robert Smith; Steven Wert, program executive officer of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Hanscom; UMass Lowell Dean of Engineering Joseph Hartman; and UMass Lowell Research Institute Director Matthew McSwain.
