‘24,’ ‘Queen of the South’ Actor to Headline Free Event
When and where: Wednesday, Nov. 28, 5 p.m. Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, North Campus, 40 University Ave., Lowell
What: Actor Joaquim de Almeida – whose credits include roles in the hit TV shows “Queen of the South” and “24,” along with more than 100 films including “Clear and Present Danger” – will headline a free program for the campus and community. Moderated by Wael Kamal, director of UMass Lowell’s Digital Media Program, the event will feature a question-and-answer session with the audience and de Almeida’s reflections on his creative process and career. Holiday Fair Showcases Handmade Crafts, Art, Ingenuity of Women
When and where: Thursday, Nov. 29, 3 to 7 p.m. UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell
What: Women artisans, craftspeople and entrepreneurs who are UMass Lowell graduates, faculty and staff, along with friends of the university, will participate in the annual Women’s Works Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair. The free event for the public features handmade and other products for sale – including jewelry, knitted items, food, paintings and more – along with performances, an art show and a silent auction. The event is presented by the UMass Lowell Center for Women and Work, which researches and seeks remedies for gender inequalities in the workplace.
Researchers Advancing Scientific Frontiers Share Discoveries
When and where: Friday, Nov. 30, 11 a.m. UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell
What: A UMass Lowell researcher pioneering X-ray imaging techniques for patients with soft-tissue injuries will talk about his work at the Sukant Tripathy Memorial Symposium. Emmanouil Gikkas, UMass Lowell assistant professor of chemistry, will be just one of the scientists from across the country who will share groundbreaking developments in fields including flexible electronics, sustainable energy, nanotechnology, biomedical engineering and more. Now in its 18th year, the conference is named for the late Sukant Tripathy, who was a UMass Lowell chemistry professor and served as director of the Center for Advanced Materials, provost and vice chancellor during his career.
Student Musicians, Vocalists Perform at Concerts for Public
Where: Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell
What: Concerts for the public that underscore the breadth and depth of talent being cultivated through UMass Lowell’s music programs and student organizations will be staged by instrumental ensembles and vocal groups. No tickets are required for admission to these events and free parking is available across the street from the concert venue. Events include performances by:
- A Cappella Groups – Student-run, voice-only ensembles – including Hawkapella, Fermata Nowhere, Vocality and the Hawkettes – will perform renditions of pop hits. Admission is free for students with a UMass Lowell ID; $10 for adults. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2 p.m. – NOTE: This event will be held at the rescheduled time noted.
- Mixed Chamber and World Music ensembles – UMass Lowell music majors in these groups will unite to perform a free, eclectic program filled with Latin rhythms. Sunday, Dec. 9, 3 p.m.
- Combined University Choirs – UMass Lowell’s Chamber Singers, University Choir and Choral Union, which include students, faculty, staff and members of the community, will perform standards and modern works at this free concert. Monday, Dec. 10, 8 p.m.
- Concert Band – Comprised of UMass Lowell student musicians, this group will play selections written by traditional and contemporary composers. Debra-Nicole Huber, associate director of university bands, will conduct the ensemble during this free event. Thursday, Dec. 13, 8 p.m.
NBC Correspondent to Lead Event on Midterm Election Results
When and where: Friday, Dec. 7, 4 p.m. O’Leary Library, Room 222, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell
What: NBC News National Political Correspondent Steve Kornacki, a frequent contributor on MSNBC and the “Today” show, will discuss the impact of the 2018 midterm election during a free program for the campus and public. He will also share insights from his new book, “The Red and the Blue: The 1990s and the Birth of Political Tribalism,” which will be available for purchase at the event. In 2017, UMass Lowell awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to Kornacki. A Groton native, he took dual-enrollment classes at the university as a high-school student.
