Public Event Shines Light on Autism’s Myths and Realities
When and where: Wednesday, Nov. 14, 6 p.m. UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill
What: “Understanding and Dispelling the Myths about Autism Spectrum Disorder,” a free program for the public, will be presented at the UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, part of the university’s new downtown Haverhill satellite campus. Rocio Rosales, a UMass Lowell psychology professor who leads the university’s Autism Studies program, will share effective treatment methods for people with autism and talk about support services for parents and caregivers available through UMass Lowell's Center for Autism Research and Education (CARE). The event is one in the iHub’s Cultural Speaker Series. Members of the public who would more information or to attend should email Stephanie_Guyotte@uml.edu.
Free Concert Spotlights Centuries of European Music
When and where: Wednesday, Nov. 14, 8 p.m. Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell
What: Works from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras will be performed by UMass Lowell’s Early Music Mixed Chamber Ensemble and Chamber Singers at a free concert for the public and campus. Madrigals, chants and choral and instrumental works by composers including J.S. Bach, Henry Purcell and Hildegard von Bingen will showcase the richness and diversity of music from these periods. The event is presented by UMass Lowell’s Medieval and Renaissance Studies program and Music Department. No tickets are required and free parking is available across the street from the venue. Idea Hackathon Challenges Participants to Create Tech Solutions
When and where: Event starts on Friday, Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m.; winning teams will be recognized on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill
What: The first-ever Hack Haverhill will offer a share of $10,000 in seed money to participants who develop the best technology solutions for education and community organizations that allow them to share resources and better assist the people they serve. The 24-hour event is presented by the city of Haverhill and will be held at the UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, part of the university’s new downtown Haverhill satellite campus. UMass Lowell students involved in the challenge are from Burlington, Lowell, Reading and Sudbury. Participation is free for high school and college students or $25 per person for other adults. Student Volunteers Prepare Food Baskets for Families in Need
When and where: Monday, Nov. 19, 10 to 11 a.m. UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, Lower Locks Room, 50 Warren St., Lowell
What: More than 300 families in need will have Thanksgiving dinner at their table this year as the result of a campus-wide food donation drive this semester organized by UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff. Volunteers from the university community will gather to assemble holiday meal baskets – each to be filled with vegetables, stuffing, a dessert and a gift certificate to a local supermarket – to go to local families selected by Merrimack Valley Catholic Charities, which is partnering with UMass Lowell on the project again this year.
