Candidates for U.S. Congress, State Senate Debate Issues
When and where: Monday, Oct. 29, 6 and 7:30 p.m., University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: Candidates vying to serve the Massachusetts Senate’s 1st Middlesex District and 3rd Congressional District will share their views before voters at two debates for the public and campus. State Senate hopefuls Democrat Edward Kennedy and Republican John MacDonald will square off at 6 p.m., followed by Republican Rick Green, independent Michael Mullen and Democrat Lori Trahan – each looking to replace U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas in Congress – at 7:30 p.m. The event is presented by UMass Lowell and The Lowell Sun. Free parking is available in the Salem Street lot, located across from the venue. Tickets are not required, but members of public who would like to attend or are seeking more information should email debate@uml.edu.
Free Halloween Concert to Feature University Orchestra
When and where: Tuesday, Oct. 30, 8 p.m. Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell
What: The University Orchestra’s annual free Halloween concert will provide spooky fun for all ages as audience members and the musicians are encouraged to dress in costume. Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,” “Danse Macabre” by Camille Saint-Saens and Hector Berlioz’s “March to the Scaffold” will be among the selections performed. The ghosts of long-dead pirates may also appear in the house when Music Department Chairman Alan Williams narrates a poem sure to shiver yer timbers. The orchestra, comprised of students, alumni, faculty and members of the community, is directed by Mark Latham. No tickets are required for the performance; free parking is available across the street from the venue. Members of the public who would like more information may email Amy_Dinsmore@uml.edu.
Flag Ceremony Honors Veterans on Campus and in the Community
When and where: Friday, Nov. 2, 11 a.m., University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: UMass Lowell student-veterans and veterans from the community will be honored at the university’s annual flag ceremony.. Free and open to the public, the event will feature recognition of this year’s inductees into the UMass Lowell Military Alumni Veterans Hall of Fame, the unfurling of an American flag measuring 36 feet by 20 feet and the presentation of the colors by UMass Lowell Air Force ROTC Detachment No. 345. Speakers will include Chancellor Jacquie Moloney and the UMass Lowell Marching Band will perform. More than 1,200 student-veterans attend UMass Lowell on campus and online.
Cutting-Edge Faculty Research Takes Center Stage
When and where: Tuesday, Nov. 6. Keynote addresses from 3:30 to 4 p.m. UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell
What: Pioneering research being conducted by UMass Lowell faculty from all of the university’s schools and colleges will be on display at a free event for the campus and community. Deborah Finch, winner of the 2018 Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching and a professor in UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business, will share how she approaches working with students in the first of two keynote addresses at 3:30 p.m. at the annual Faculty Symposium. The second keynote, which follows, will explore pioneering new research on how the body moves and performs by Pei-Chun Kao and Yi-Ning Wu, both professors of physical therapy and kinesiology.
