General Who Helped Lead Cambodian Peace Process to Speak
When and where: Saturday, Oct. 27, 1 p.m. O’Leary Library Learning Commons, Room 222, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell
What: Cambodia’s 1991 peace treaty – which ended the country’s war with Vietnam but left wounds from years of genocide and other violence – will be explored at a free public event. Royal Cambodian Armed Forces Gen. Chheang Mam (ret.), who now lives in Lowell, will discuss his role in crafting the treaty, which took more than 27 years to implement and offers lessons for peacebuilding today. The event is presented by the UMass Lowell Center for Asian American Studies and the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association of Lowell. Open House Invites to Become River Hawks
When and where: Sunday, Oct. 28, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell
What: Individuals interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree at UMass Lowell are invited to an open house that will introduce them to academic programs, campus life, faculty, students, alumni and staff. Exhibits, presentations, a resource fair and campus tours will provide participants with everything they will need to know to soar as River Hawks. New offerings include bachelor’s degree programs in pharmaceutical sciences and exercise science, and new liberal arts concentrations in disability studies and health studies. UMass Lowell academics are nationally accredited and ranked for quality and return on investment. Graduates earn some of the highest starting and mid-career salaries in the nation. Candidates Debate Issues in Races for State Senate, U.S. Congress
When and where: Monday, Oct. 29, 6 to 8:30 p.m., University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: Candidates vying to serve constituents in the state Senate’s 1st Middlesex District and Massachusetts’ 3rd Congressional District will share their views before voters in two free debates for the campus community and public. State Senate hopefuls Democrat Edward Kennedy and Republican John MacDonald will square off at 6 p.m., while a second session featuring Republican Rick Green, independent Michael Mullen and Democrat Lori Trahan – each looking to replace U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas in Congress – will follow at 7:30 p.m. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6. The event is presented by UMass Lowell and The Lowell Sun. Free parking is available in the Salem Street lot, located across from the venue. Tickets are not required, but members of public who would like to attend or are seeking more information should email debate@uml.edu.
Free Halloween Concert to Feature University Orchestra
When and where: Tuesday, Oct. 30, 8 p.m. Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell
What: The University Orchestra’s annual free Halloween concert will provide spooky fun for all ages as audience members and the musicians are encouraged to dress in costume. Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,” “Danse Macabre” by Camille Saint-Saens and Hector Berlioz’s “March to the Scaffold” will be among the selections performed. The ghosts of long-dead pirates may also appear in the house when Music Department Chairman Alan Williams narrates a poem sure to shiver yer timbers. The orchestra, comprised of students, alumni, faculty and members of the community, is directed by Mark Latham.
