Solving Gun Violence Against Youth is Aim of Public Forum   

When and where: Wednesday, Oct. 17, 4:30 p.m. UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell

What: “Voices for Action: Confronting Gun Violence Against Kids,” a forum hosted by UMass Lowell’s College of Education, will unite policymakers, educators, students and the public to work toward solutions for this national issue. Peter Cunningham, an education advocate who served as the U.S. Department of Education’s assistant secretary for communications and outreach during the Obama administration, is the keynote speaker. Following his talk, a panel discussion will be held featuring organizers from March for Our Lives Boston – formed in the aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in February – along with school leaders, students and law enforcement officials from Boston, Brookline, Lawrence, Lowell, Reading, Woburn, and Providence, R.I. The forum, the Panasuk Symposium on Educational Research, Policy and Practice, is named for its founder, Regina Panasuk, an award-winning UMass Lowell professor emeritus. Job Recruiters, Students to Connect at Fall Career Fair  

When and where: Thursday, Oct. 18, 4 to 7 p.m. Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell

What: More than 200 employers looking to fill full-time positions, internships and co-ops will be at UMass Lowell’s Fall Career Fair to meet with hundreds of UMass Lowell students readying to join the workforce. Recruiters, many of whom are alumni, and students will be available to talk about why they are participating in the event, just one of the many ways UMass Lowell’s Career and Co-op Center prepares students for the professional world. Ninety-four percent of members of the Class of 2017 were employed full time or enrolled in graduate school within six months of receiving their diplomas. UMass Lowell alumni earn among the top starting and mid-career salaries among graduates of all New England public research institutions, according to PayScale.com. Note: The event is not open to the public but members of the media are invited to cover it.  

Birdsong at Morning to Perform with Music Students, Faculty 

When and where: Sunday, Oct. 21, 3 p.m. Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell

What: Pop group Birdsong and Morning, led by UMass Lowell Music Department Chairman Alan Williams, will perform a free concert for the public to showcase songs from the band’s latest release, “Signs and Wonders.” UMass Lowell’s Chamber Singers and a 20-piece string section featuring students and faculty members will accompany the band, which has garnered critical acclaim for its lush arrangements and haunting melodies. The group’s new recording was mastered by Grammy-winning audio engineer Adam Ayan, a graduate of UMass Lowell’s sound recording technology program. Tickets are not required for the show and free parking is available across the street from the venue.

General Who Helped Lead Cambodian Peace Process to Speak  

When and where: Saturday, Oct. 27, 1 p.m. O’Leary Library Learning Commons, Room 222, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell

What: Cambodia’s 1991 peace treaty – which ended the country’s war with Vietnam but left wounds from years of genocide and violence – will be explored at a free public event. Royal Cambodian Armed Forces Gen. Chheang Mam (ret.), who now lives in Lowell, will discuss his role in crafting the peace treaty, which took more than 27 years to implement and offers lessons for peacebuilding today. The event is presented by the UMass Lowell Center for Asian American Studies and the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association of Lowell. Free Halloween Concert to Feature University Orchestra 

When and where: Tuesday, Oct. 30, 8 p.m. Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell

What: The University Orchestra’s free, annual Halloween concert will provide spooky fun for all ages as audience members and the musicians are encouraged to dress in costume. Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,” “Danse Macabre” by Camille Saint-Saens and Hector Berlioz’s “March to the Scaffold” will be among the selections performed. The ghosts of long-dead pirates may also appear in the house when Music Department Chairman Alan Williams narrates a poem sure to shiver yer timbers. The orchestra, comprised of students, alumni, faculty and members of the community, is directed by Mark Latham.
