UMass Lowell faculty experts are available to discuss:
- NASA’s Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and the importance of its mission, as the satellite is expected to fall to Earth this week;
- The Golden State Killer case and the ethical debate about using information from genealogical websites to identify suspects;
- The conflicting emotions Mother’s Day can evoke, particularly for children who are adopted or in foster care.

Performers Raise their Voices for Year-End Show
When and where: Tuesday, May 1, 8 p.m. Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell
What: UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff who are members of the University Choir and Chamber Singers will combine for a unique, year-end concert that will blend their voices in a performance of songs from a variety of musical genres and periods. The free event is open to the campus and public.

Event Shines Light on Students’ Love of Discovery
When and where: Wednesday, May 2. Pitch contest from 2 to 4 p.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: Projects that explore the connection between nutrition and mental health, the genetic factors behind Huntington’s disease and the impact of data mining will be among the more than 200 presentations at the 21st annual Student Research and Community Engagement Symposium. The event provides a venue for UMass Lowell undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students in all fields to display their work, including the results of internships and co-ops, for their peers, faculty and guests. More than 80 students are expected to participate in a pitch contest where they will discuss their work and vie for awards before expert judges.

‘Invitation to Innovation’ Showcases Ingenuity
When and where: Friday, May 4, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell
What: “Invitation to Innovation,” a free event for the public and school groups, will highlight the creativity and industry of UMass Lowell students, who apply classroom and hands-on learning to develop products, prototypes and projects. A solar-powered device that collects trash from waterways, products made by 3-D printing and a Formula One-style race car will be featured. The event spotlights the work of students enrolled in the university’s Francis College of Engineering, Kennedy College of Sciences and Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences. Art and Design Students to Exhibit Senior Projects
When and where: Artists’ reception – Thursday, May 10, 5 p.m., University Gallery. Exhibit runs from Thursday, May 10 through Saturday, May 19, in University Gallery, Mahoney Gallery and other public spaces inside Mahoney Hall, South Campus, 870 Broadway St., Lowell
What: UMass Lowell art and design students who will receive their degrees at Commencement on Saturday, May 19 will showcase their senior thesis projects at a free artists’ reception and exhibit for the university community and public. Works include paintings, photography, 3-D animation, mixed media, web design and interactive installation projects. Participating students are from Ashby, Billerica, Burlington, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Everett, Groton, Lawrence, Leominster, Lowell, Lunenburg, Lynn, Methuen, North Andover, Tewksbury, Townsend, Wellesley, Westford, Woburn and Worcester, along with Hampton and Salem, N.H., and Tobyhanna, Pa. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the public who would like more information should contact Deborah_Santoro@uml.edu.

Pulitzer Prize-winning Author, Legislator to Address Graduates
When and where: Saturday, May 19, with ceremonies at 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell
What: Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Jon Meacham and U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas will address graduates of UMass Lowell’s Class of 2018 at Commencement. In recognition of their outstanding achievements, Tsongas will be presented with the Chancellor’s Medal and Meacham will receive an honorary degree, along with alumnus James Dandeneau ’80, founder, president and CEO of Putnam Plastics, and Groton School Headmaster Temba Maqubela. Mark Russell ’83, a Raytheon Co. vice president, will be presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Meacham, a presidential historian, will address graduates during the morning ceremony, while Tsongas – who in 2007 became the first woman in 25 years to represent Massachusetts in Congress – will speak during the afternoon ceremony.
