What: The Baker-Polito Administration has declared a statewide “STEM Week” from Oct. 22 through Oct. 26 in an effort to boost students’ interest and raise awareness of STEM education. UMass Lowell will share highlights of the university’s numerous initiatives promoting interests in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.
Among the topics to be discussed will be the university’s Making WAVES (Women Academics Valued and Engaged in STEM) Project and its RAMP (Research, Academics and Mentoring Pathways) to Success Program.
In addition to these programs, in the last five years, UMass Lowell faculty and students in STEM fields have produced more than 3,000 publications and won more than 180 research grants totaling more than $80 million in areas such as advanced materials, manufacturing, biomanufacturing, digital health and cybersecurity. University faculty members have secured multiple patents and licenses and helped to launch a number of startup companies.
UMass Lowell is also home to a number of STEM-based research centers, including:
- The Fabric Discovery Center, a brand-new, one-of-a-kind research facility for the development of smart textiles, flexible electronics, robotics and automation;
- HEROES, a research and development center to improve soldier survivability through technological innovation, a collaboration with the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC).
