MEDIA ADVISORY

WHEN: Tuesday, April 3, 12:30 to 2 p.m.

WHAT: Nobel Peace Prize winner and UMass Lowell’s 2018 Greeley Scholar for Peace Studies Tawakkol Karman will lead UMass Lowell’s annual recognition of the Day Without Violence. The free program will focus on nonviolent activism as a means of struggle, change and success.

The first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize and the second-youngest recipient, Karman is a bold and outspoken activist for the rights of women in her home country of Yemen and other nations. Karman is known for her strength against opposition and for her inspiring countless people around the world with her philosophy: “We do not fear the future, we make it.”

Karman shared the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize with Leymah Gbowee, who was UMass Lowell’s Greeley Scholar that same year, and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, all three of whom are known for using nonviolent protest to achieve political and social change.

A mother of three, Karman is president of Women Journalists Without Chains and is actively involved with several other international human rights organizations including the Peaceful Youth Revolution Council.

UMass Lowell each year selects a Greeley Scholar for Peace Studies in recognition of their achievements as humanitarians and efforts to promote peace and conflict resolution. The honor is named for Rev. Dana McLean Greeley, who was a longtime Unitarian Universalist minister in Concord. In addition to the Day Without Violence, the scholar participates in programs on campus and the community while they are in residence at the university.
