Elections with a lot of uncertainly produce unexpected results – a dynamic seen in many of last night’s Democratic primaries across the country, according to a U.S. politics expert available for interviews today about the Massachusetts races and who won, lost, or are still waiting to find out.

That’s the case for Dan Koh and Lori Trahan, who are vying for the Democratic nomination in the 3rd District congressional race, after a topsy-turvey night that had them running neck-and-neck with still no winner this morning.

“Right now, Trahan appears to be leading and is playing it smart by declaring victory: she needs to create the narrative that she is the victor,” said U.S. politics expert John Cluverius, who can offer his analysis on her strong showing at the polls and the performance of candidates in other races, including Ayanna Pressley, who bested 10-term incumbent Michael Capuano to become the first black woman to represent Massachusetts in the House of Representatives, having no Republican opponent in the general election.

Cluverius teaches in UMass Lowell’s Political Science Department where he is a fellow in the university’s Center for Public Opinion. Before joining UMass Lowell, he worked as a political consultant for a variety of candidates for elective office and interest groups.
