The SDASL attended the 39th International Modal Analysis Conference at the beginning of February 2021.

A virtual get together was held on Monday of the conference with current and old faces appearing in the virtual room. Usually a group photo is taken but this year virtual shots were all that were available. Above is the group pictured with current UML SDASL students along with recent graduates, alumni and faculty. Pictured in no particular order: Deborah Fowler (PhD candidate ’21), Tim Marinone (ATA Engineering - BS/MS ’12’), Lou Thibault (MIT-LL BSMS ’12), Yuanchang Chen (PhD ‘19’), Julie Harvie (Vibes Technology - BSMS ’13’), Celso do Cabo (PhD candidate ’22), Bahadir Sarikaya (PhD candidate ‘22’), Dagny Joffre/Beale (PhD’19’), Chris Beale (PhD’19’), Peter Avitabile (Professor Mechanical Engineering UML PhD ‘98), Javad Baqersad (Kettering University UML PhD ’15’), Dan Rohe (Sandia PhD candidate ’21), Brandon Zwink (PhD’20), Tina Dardeno (PhD ‘20’), Ryan Schultz (PhD ‘19’) Attending but not shown: Murat Inalpolat (Assistant Professor Mechanical Engineering), Zhu Mao (Assistant Professor Mechanical Engineering), Nick Valente (PhD ‘23’) Patrick Logan (PhD ‘20’), Mark Todisco (BS ‘20”), Matt Southwick (MS ‘20’)

The SDASL Lab attended the 39th International Modal Analysis Conference at the beginning of February 2021. Of course, this presented a very different way in which SDASL participated in the conference.

At the conference, nine students presented papers along with other papers and presentations by faculty. At the conference, many students and former alumni joined together in this virtual event. The SDASL always makes a significant set of presentations at this international conference every year. Many of the papers spanned a wide range of topics currently under development in the SDASL for funded and unfunded projects. Many of the conference attendees noted the high caliber of research and especially the quality student presentations at the conference.

Those who attended were current UML SDASL students along with recent graduates, alumni and faculty, including: Deborah Fowler (PhD candidate ’21), Tim Marinone (ATA Engineering - BS/MS ’12), Lou Thibault (MIT-LL BSMS ’12), Yuanchang Chen (PhD ‘19), Julie Harvie (Vibes Technology - BSMS ’13), Celso do Cabo (PhD candidate ’22), Bahadir Sarikaya (PhD candidate ‘22), Dagny Joffre/Beale (PhD ’19), Chris Beale (PhD ’19), Peter Avitabile (Professor Mechanical Engineering UML PhD ‘98), Javad Baqersad (Kettering University UML PhD ’15), Dan Rohe (Sandia PhD candidate ’21), Brandon Zwink (PhD ’20), Tina Dardeno (PhD ‘20), Ryan Schultz (PhD ‘19), Murat Inalpolat (Assistant Professor Mechanical Engineering), Zhu Mao (Assistant Professor Mechanical Engineering), Nick Valente (PhD ‘23) Patrick Logan (PhD ‘20), Mark Todisco (BS ‘20), Matt Southwick (MS ‘20).

The papers presented for the Proceedings of the Thirty-Ninth International Modal Analysis Conference were:

  1. "Dynamic Response Expansion Using a Hybrid Transformation Approach" presented by Patrick Logan
  2. "On The Use of Optical Data in Conjunction with Phase-Based Motion Magnification and Strain Expansion" presented by Brett Daniels
  3. "An Analytical Investigation of Expansion of Geometrically Nonlinear Response using Linear Modes" presented by Debby Fowler
  4. "Practical Considerations for Response Tailoring using the Fixture Neutralization (FINE) Method" presented by Chris Page
  5. "A Multiple Impact Test Technique" presented by Peter Avitabile
  6. "An Optical Mode Shape-Based Damage Detection using Convolutional Neural Networks" presented by Celso do Cabo
  7. "A Computational Investigation into Vibration Absorption Performance of Centrifugal Pendulum Absorbers with Different Absorber Configurations" presented by Bahadir Sarikaya
  8. "High-Rate Damage Classification and Lifecycle Prediction via Deep Learning" presented by Mark Todisco
  9. "Volumetric Motion Magnification" presented by Matt Southwick
  10. "A Sensitivity Study of Phase Based Motion Magnification for Oscillating Structures" presented by Nick Valente
  11. "Multi-Level Damage Detection using Octree Partitioning Algorithm", presented by Mehrdad Shafiei Dizaji.

NOTE: This paper coauthored with Professor Zhu Mao is selected as 2nd place in the 2021 Best Paper Competition in the Computer Vision and Laser Vibrometry. According to the Technical Division: "This award was established to recognize authors of outstanding papers presented at IMAC. Papers are judged for their value as contributions to existing knowledge of computer vision and optical techniques and primarily with respect to their value as an original contribution to the subject matter. This award is sponsored by Polytec, and also provides a $500 prize."
