About Professor Chakrabarti:
Professor Supriya Chakrabarti is a globally recognized leader in space science and astrophysics. As a professor in the Department of Physics and Applied Physics at UMass Lowell, he has dedicated his career to advancing our understanding of space through groundbreaking research in astronomical imaging. Chakrabarti has made significant contributions to the design and development of state-of-the-art instruments used for exploring planetary systems and capturing images of distant celestial objects. His work exemplifies the powerful intersection of cutting-edge engineering, hands-on student mentorship, and visionary scientific exploration.
Chakrabarti was nominated for this distinguished award by 15 faculty members spanning three colleges and seven departments. As noted in their nomination letter, “Professor Chakrabarti’s exemplary, nationally and internationally acclaimed research, combined with his leadership in undergraduate and graduate education, has played a pivotal role in enhancing UMass Lowell’s visibility as a leader in space science.”
Chakrabarti is the 17th professor to receive the award since it was established in 2008. His three-year term as Distinguished University Professor will run through 2027.
