Free online apps and tools are convenient, but their business model typically involves selling access to your attention and your personal data. Here are some tips to help protect your privacy and security:
  • Read the privacy policy before signing up. Understand what data will be collected and how it will be used. Look for apps and services that prioritize privacy.
  • Limit permissions. When installing apps, only grant the permissions the app needs. Avoid apps that request access to unrelated data like your contacts or location.
  • Avoid using social media login accounts to sign in to other services. Linking accounts allows your identity and activity to be tracked across platforms, increasing privacy risk.
  • Review privacy settings on major platforms and disable ad personalization to limit data collection.
  • Periodically clear browser cookies and cache. Use privacy-focused browser settings and extensions to block trackers.
