On Tuesday, Sept. 24, renowned jazz guitarist John Stowell will visit the UML Music Department for an improvisation masterclass and concert.

Since the early 1970s, Stowell has performed or recorded with such notables as Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Art Farmer and Billy Higgins. He has toured globally, and in 1983, he joined Grammy-nominated flutist Paul Horn for a historic tour of the Soviet Union. Stowell, who was featured on the soundtracks of two Academy Award-nominated short films, has been artist-in-residence at schools all over the world, and is a contributing columnist for several magazines, including Downbeat and Guitar Player. He is the author of “Jazz Guitar Mastery.”

He will present a jazz improvisation masterclass at 5 p.m., and a concert at 8 p.m. on Sept. 24. Faculty members Charles Gabriel and Andrew Fordyce will accompany on the concert.

Both events are in the recital hall of the Moloney Performing Arts Center and are made possible by a grant from Mosaic Lowell. Both events are free and open to the public.
